About the Show

Jay Carter started working in radio when he was a senior in High School in the 1980s. When he turned 21, he interviewed a police recruiter with Las Vegas Metro on air. To make a long story short, he quickly found himself serving in law enforcement. However, side-by-side with his career in law enforcement he continued to work in radio part-time.

Jay has been married to Monica for over 34 years. They have two children, including an autistic son, Travis, and a daughter, Teri who plays in a Go-Go’s Tribute Band in Nashville.

After 45 years in Las Vegas, they moved to East Tennessee in 2017 and Jay started working with 96.7 Merle in October of 2017.

“I am the luckiest guy around. To be on the air in Knoxville and East TN with 96.7 Merle is truly a dream job. I am truly blessed. May not be the loudest or flashiest but I have the heart for radio.”

What do you love about country music?

Country music is rooted in history and heritage tells the story of the country’s working people. God, Family and Country.

What do you like about being on the radio?

I am the luckiest guy around. There are a lot of out of work DJs and to be on the air in Knoxville and East TN is truly a dream job. I am truly blessed. May not be the loudest or flashiest but I have the heart for radio.

Who is your favorite country legend?

I have so many country legends that are my favorite. Johnny Cash – saw him with my dad. Loretta Lynn, Gary Stewart, Waylon and George Jones.

Who is your favorite new country star?

I really like Grayland James, Ella Langley and Meagan Marooney.

96.7 Merle makes a big deal out of playing the songs other country stations seem to be missing these days. With such a rich variety of artists and different kinds of songs, how do you feel about mixing it all together?

That’s what makes our station great. We play those forgotten favorites with the new country you love. CAN’T BEAT IT!

When you are on the air, how do you make it special for someone just tuning in to 96.7 Merle?

When I’m on air I try to make the listeners feel like they’re talking to old friends. We have the best listeners in East Tennessee and a lot have become like family. Best part of the job is interaction with listeners.
