Mike Hammond was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009 by Taylor Swift. During his 40 years of programming, his stations were named CMA Radio Station Of The Year a total of 8 times. Mike’s country stations also took home the ACM Station Of The Year 5 times and the Marconi Country Station Of The Year 3 times.

You’d think with a track record like that, Mike would be all about winning station of the year trophies, but Mike believes in people and community. His stations also took home Humanitarian Station Of The Year 3 times. He was recognized as CMA Program Director Of The Year and was named Country Aircheck Program Director Of The Year 4 times. We are honored to have Mike choose to work on 96.7 Merle.

Mike Hammond Q & A

What do you love about country music?

I love country music because it connects with people.

What do you like about being on the radio?

When I am on the air I like to let people know interesting tid bits about the artists and their music.

Who is your favorite country legend?

My favorite legend is Waylon Jennings.

Who is your favorite new country star?

My favorite new star is Morgan Wallen.

96.7 Merle makes a big deal out of playing the songs other country stations seem to have forgotten these days. With such a rich variety of artists and different kinds of songs, how do you feel about mixing it all together?

That’s what makes country music so rich. Sometimes hearing just the newest thing can leave you feeling hollow. You hear one of those favorites that radio seems to have forgotten and you go, “Oh, yeah. I love that.” You turn it up. There’s nothing wrong with new things, but the balance where you hear those so called ‘forgotten favorite songs’ and the new country you really love? That’s pretty great. That’s 96.7 Merle.

When you are on the air, how do you make it special for someone just tuning in to 96.7 Merle

It’s about relating knowledge about the music. Listeners feel connected when you are connected. I’ve never really just showed up and been on the air. I feel I am part of country music. It is a privilege to be on the air and to meet, know and be involved with the stars in country and our listeners.
